Qinghuangdao, ChinaThe Silent Garden is a temporary, site-specific public installation commissioned by Aranya in Qinhuangdao, China. Through the metaphor of symbiosis, the project explores the entangled relationships between nature, human activity, and collective existence in an increasingly interconnected world.
The project began with the discovery of a fragment of bleached coral during a walk along the beach. Research into coral bleaching led Li to images of strange underwater landscapes where plastic bags, fishing nets, and other human-made debris had settled among coral reefs, forming unexpected relationships between natural and artificial elements.
Inspired by these encounters, Li transforms the drifting shapes of marine debris into enlarged, interlocking cardboard forms housed within a recyclable geodesic dome. Drawing on Domebook One (1970) and its experiments in alternative, sustainable ways of living, the installation offers a space for reflecting on coexistence, interdependence, and the traces of human presence within the natural world.Domebook One, Pacific Domes 1970, by Lloyd Kahn, Robert Easton and others
